Powers & Symbol
Zhang Guolao is the eccentric elder sage who travels everywhere seated backwards on a white donkey, beating a cylindrical fish drum made of bamboo and fish skin. His mount is no ordinary beast; in some tales it is a paper donkey that he can fold up and store in his pocket, then restore to life with a splash of water. The rhythmic sound of his drum is believed to summon animals, predict fortune, and dispel confusion. He also carries a long beard and a mocking smile, refusing to bow to emperors or follow social convention. His powers center on reversal and surprise: what seems backward reveals hidden wisdom, and what appears frail carries hidden speed. He is also said to be able to walk through solid rock as if it were mist.
The Legend
Zhang Guolao lived as a Taoist hermit during the Tang dynasty, famous for refusing repeated imperial invitations to serve at court. Emperors sent messengers with grand titles and gifts; he accepted none, preferring the company of his donkey and the rhythm of his fish drum. One story tells that he demonstrated his immortality by allowing himself to be buried alive, only to emerge weeks later unharmed. Another claims he married late in life and fathered children simply to prove that the sage need not reject ordinary life. His refusal of power became a kind of power in itself, and the Tang court eventually honored him as a living immortal rather than a subject, sending gifts to his mountain retreat until the end of the dynasty.

In the Stories of the Eight Immortals
In stories of the Eight Immortals, Zhang Guolao is often portrayed as the oddball sage whose unconventional methods baffle enemies and allies alike. He arrives riding backwards, speaks in riddles, and solves problems through paradox rather than force. Filmmakers use him for comic relief and sudden insight: the immortal who seems forgetful until he reveals he has understood the entire plot from the beginning. His paper donkey offers memorable visual gags, while his fish drum provides a percussive signature during group scenes. Though rarely the central love interest or main fighter, he is the wildcard whose surprise intervention turns defeat into victory at the crucial moment. Because he questions every assumption, he often spots the flaw in an enemy's plan that swifter fighters have missed entirely.
