The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea
Long ago, the Eight Immortals received an invitation to the legendary peach banquet hosted by the Queen Mother of the West in her celestial palace. After sharing a joyful meal on the shores of Mount Lao, they set out for the Western Paradise, only to find their path blocked by the vast expanse of the Bohai Sea. The waters stretched to the horizon, wild and glittering beneath an endless sky. Ordinarily, immortals of their stature could simply ride clouds or summon a wind to carry them across, but on this occasion Lü Dongbin proposed a different test of skill.
"Let us not rely on the common arts of flight," he said. "Each of us has cultivated a unique gift. Let each one cross the sea by his or her own power, so that the waves may witness what we truly are." The others agreed, and so began one of the most famous displays of magic in all of Chinese folklore.
Li Tieguai went first. He tossed his iron crutch into the waves, and at once it grew into a sturdy raft while his calabash gourd swelled to the size of a boat. Leaning on the crutch, he drifted across the surface as calmly as if he were crossing a village pond. Zhongli Quan followed, setting his great banana-leaf fan upon the water. The fan became a green raft that bore his jovial bulk, and with a lazy wave of his hand he turned a passing fish to gold, then laughed and let it swim away.
Zhang Guolao produced a folded paper donkey from his sleeve, sprinkled it with water, and the creature sprang to life. Mounting it backwards, as was his habit, he beat his fish drum and clip-clopped across the foam without wetting a single hoof. Lü Dongbin stepped onto his demon-slaying sword, which cut through the air and then skimmed the waves like a silver dragonfly. Han Xiangzi stood upon his magic flute, playing a melody so enchanting that the sea itself grew still to listen, while blossoms drifted down around him even though no tree was near.
He Xiangu set a lotus flower upon the water and seated herself upon its broad pink petals. Her basket of sacred herbs rested beside her, and wherever she passed the brine turned sweet and small fish leaped in colored arcs. Lan Caihe danced across the surface on a pair of wooden clappers, tossing flowers from the basket and singing a song so light that the salt spray rose to form rainbows. Cao Guojiu came last, riding his jade court tablet as though it were a scholar's raft, his official robes unruffled by wind or wave.
Their display attracted attention from below. The Dragon King of the Eastern Sea looked up from his coral palace and grew jealous of such power. His son, a proud and reckless prince, decided to seize one of the immortal artifacts for himself. He rose from the depths with a host of sea soldiers and snatched at Han Xiangzi's flute, dragging the young musician beneath the waves. At once the other immortals turned back, their competitive crossing forgotten. Lü Dongbin's sword blazed, Zhongli Quan's fan summoned wind and flame, and Zhang Guolao's donkey kicked up walls of water. The battle shook the sea from surface to seabed.
After a fierce struggle, the immortals defeated the dragon prince and freed Han Xiangzi. The Dragon King, recognizing their righteousness, offered apology and safe passage. With dignity restored and friendship renewed, the Eight completed their crossing together and continued to the banquet, their fame forever linked to that day upon the Bohai Sea.
The Proverb
八仙过海,各显神通
The tale gave rise to the well-known proverb "The Eight Immortals cross the sea, each reveals their divine powers." In everyday speech, the saying describes any situation where a group of capable people face a shared challenge and each person contributes their own particular talent. It celebrates individual strengths rather than forcing everyone to follow the same method. Just as the immortals crossed the same water by very different means, human teams solve problems best when every member is free to show what they do well. The phrase has become an encouragement to trust diverse skills: when the task is great, each reveals the gift that only they possess.
