Powers & Symbol
Lü Dongbin is the most celebrated of the Eight Immortals, a scholar-swordsman who wields a demon-slaying sword that can cut through illusion, evil spirits, and the desires of the human heart. Dressed as a wandering scholar with a fly-whisk and a sword across his back, he roams the world righting wrongs and testing seekers. His blade does not merely kill; it reveals truth, exposing demons disguised as beautiful women or corrupt officials. He also carries a wine jug and a flute, symbols of the poet-immortal who moves between tavern and temple. His swordsmanship is matched only by his mastery of Taoist texts, making him both thinker and fighter in every legend that bears his name. He is the patron of barbers and scholars alike.
The Legend
Lü Dongbin was born Lü Yan, a brilliant scholar who failed the imperial exams and drifted into a life of drinking and disappointment. In a Chang'an inn he met Zhongli Quan, who invited him to share a meal while a servant cooked millet. As the grain simmered, Lü fell into a dream in which he passed the exams, rose to high office, married, fathered children, suffered betrayal, and died in disgrace. He woke to find the millet still uncooked. The vision of worldly glory and ruin collapsed in an instant, and he recognized Zhongli Quan as an immortal master. Renouncing ambition, he followed the old sage into the mountains and became the paragon of the Eight Immortals, a title he accepted with humility rather than pride.

In the Stories of the Eight Immortals
In stories of the Eight Immortals, Lü Dongbin is often portrayed as the central hero and romantic lead, the swordsman whose noble bearing anchors the ensemble. He is the one who devises plans, confronts demon lords, and delivers the climactic strike against darkness. Directors usually emphasize his scholar's elegance: flowing robes, sharp eyes, and a sword that flashes with blue light. Yet his character also carries melancholy, a man who gave up fame and family for a higher duty. His relationships with Zhongli Quan as mentor and with He Xiangu as fellow immortal provide emotional texture, while his demon-slaying blade supplies the action that drives the plot forward. His failed-scholar backstory gives the story its emotional core, showing that greatness can rise from the ruins of ambition.
